With high expectations for this year’s BET award show from last year, this year’s award show definitely did not disappoint with many exciting and even shocking moments. The star studded night was filled with wins and loses in both awards, fashion, and performances. First, let’s take a look at the fashion of the night! Some people came ready to slay and we have to start with the bold and beautiful Cardi B. Cardi’s red Givenchy suit made a statement and showed everyone that she is ready to take the entertainment world by storm and displayed her boss side.
Following suit, the adorable pair Gucci Mane and Asahd Khaled: DJ Khaled’s iconic son came matching in vibrant blue Gucci suits. The rapper and baby producer duo won over hearts with their classy and endearing ensemble.
Coming in on the other end of the spectrum however was Blac Chyna and Lil Kim. While we give kudos to both ladies for taking fashion risks on the red carpet, these red carpet outfits just didn’t make the cut in the end.
Is there such a thing as too much bling? Yes. Exhibit A or in this case K: Lil Kim in her see through sparkle bodysuit with matching bejeweled clutch and heels left nothing to the imagination at the awards show and for that she earns a spot in our worst dressed of the night.
While Blac Chyna’s post baby body left us stunned, her red carpet outfit had our jaws dropping and for all the wrong reasons. With over puffed sleeves and sky high heels, this outfit immediately took the crown for worst dressed of the night.
Better luck next time ladies!
Moving along, we have my favorite part of the show- the performances and of course the BET award show wouldn’t be complete without a legendary reunion from Xscape. The 90’s R&B girl group gave everyone the feels when they performed a throwback medley of all their most iconic songs. This long awaited reunion was greatly anticipated and the girls killed it with their incredible energy and showed that even after 18 years, they still got it.
Another notable performance was from the young but extremely talented 19 year old Khalid. This up and coming singer performed his hit single “Location” and showed his great potential to be the next big thing with his melodic voice and likeable boy-next-door look.
After all the performances, the night ended with the point of the show- the awards. The award show had a variety of categories varying from “Best Female Hiphop Artist” to “Best Movie” to “Best Male R&B/Pop Artist”. Remy Ma won for Best Female Hiphop artist which shocked many people because they speculated that the winner would be Nicki Minaj. The win was controversial because funny enough, the two competitors recently had major drama when Remy Ma released a diss track “ShETHER” about Nicki Minaj which Minaj quickly retaliated with “No Frauds”. Although Nicki Minaj is more known in the mainstream music world, the Love and Hip Hop star Remy Ma proved her place as the OG hip hop veteran.
Not surprisingly, Bruno Mars took home the award for Best R&B/Pop artist because the groovy singer constantly comes out with catchy and fun songs. Bruno Mars has been on a roll lately and he doesn’t seem to be planning to stop his pop takeover anytime soon!
Migos won for best group which is a big moment for the dynamic trio because they really showed that 2017 was their year. With the release and success of their new album “Culture”, iconic hit song “Bad and Bougee”, and multiple collaborations with huge artists, Migos is now one of hip hop’s most well known groups.
Last but certainly not least, rounding out the awards for the night Chance the Rapper took home three, the coveted Humanitarian Award, Best New Artist and Best Collaboration. Looking back in the last year alone, Chance the Rapper has donated 1 million dollars to Chicago schools and has helped raise over 2 million dollars for nonprofits, so it’s no wonder this year he took home the Humanitarian Award, becoming the youngest recipient of the award to date. On top of his humanitarian efforts, he has also become the first artist to make it to the Billboard 200 chart based on streams alone with his hit fourth mixtape Coloring Book. This is only the beginning for this Chicago native and we can’t wait to see where his career takes him next!
And that ladies and gents is a wrap for our recap of this years BET awards! If we didn’t mention your favorite moment of the night, please comment yours below! Till next time folks. 🙂
The FAB team,
