5 FAB Looks from the 2017 Emmys

Happy Wednesday to all our fellow FAB fashionistas out there! Today, we are bringing you our top 5 favorite looks from Sunday’s Emmys. We must admit, it was pretty hard to narrow it down to just 5 because we saw so many ladies (and gentlemen) dressed to the nines! Ladies like Shailene Woodley, Viola Davis, and Nicole Kidman killed it with the darker, autumn toned shades while ladies like Millie Bobby Brown, Sofia Vergara, and Samira Wiley showed us that you can indeed look FAB wearing white after Labor Day. So without further ado, we present to you our top 5 favorite looks!

Shailene Woodley

First up on our list we have Shailene Woodley, from HBO’s Big Little Lies. Shailene awed us all in her floor length moss green velvet dress by Ralph Lauren. So simple, yet so elegant with minimal accessories. Hey, Shai, if you don’t plan on wearing the dress again we wouldn’t mind “borrowing” it for a night out! 😉

Angela Sarafyan

Angela Sarafyan, from HBO’s Westworld, wore one of those dresses that literally nobody else could pull off, except herself, and she did indeed look drop dead gorgeous in it! Her off the shoulder yellow Elizabeth Kennedy dress complemented her skin tone so well and really made her eyes pop. Not to take away from the color of the dress, Angela opted for a more natural make-up style and very minimal accessories.

Yara Shahidi

Next up on our list we have Yara Shahidi from ABC’s Black-ish. Her beige and sea-foam green embroidered Prada gown truly made her look like a walking goddess. She paired the ensemble with a metallic gold belt around the waist that really brought the whole look together.

Gina Rodriguez

Our next FAB fashionista is Gina Rodriguez from The CW’s Jane the Virgin. Gina showed up all smiles in a floor length red sequined dress with a deep v neckline by Naeem Khan. She totally rocked the red carpet in this gown and we could all tell that she felt like a total #BOSS from the way she was smiling from ear to ear the whole time.

Claire Foy

And last, but certainly not list, we have Claire Foy from Netflix’s The Crown. Unlike our previous fashionistas we mentioned, Claire decided to opt for an off the shoulder Oscar De La Renta black jumpsuit for the occasion. She rocked the look looking as chic and classy as ever. Pairing the look with some simple silver accessories, black heels, and bright red lips, she definitely showed up looking like royalty!

And that’s a wrap to this year’s Emmys Red Carpet looks! Did we mention your favorite look? If not, let us know who looked the most FAB in the comments down below!

MTV VMA’s Performance Recap

Welcome back to all of our FAB readers! We are back and better than ever to give you guys the load down on this year’s MTV VMAs.  With plenty of memorable performances throughout the night, we can’t wait to get started and fill you all in.

blog pic 2

First up is the one and only Kendrick Lamar. He took a grand total of 6 awards throughout the night, finally breaking his running losing streak. However what really captured and held our attention was his unique and powerful performance of the night. His performance, which included his rendition of his top 5 hits to date, was truly notable as not just visually stunning, with ninja’s climbing burning scaffold as he rapped, but politically stunning as well. Kendrick Lamar chose to keep a sample of Fox’s The Five, in which they criticised his 2015 BET showing, as the opener to his hit track DNA. While this performance wasn’t as politically charged as some of his past ones were, it still made it clear to all in attendance that he will remain politically active in all aspects of his career including performances.

Blog Pic 3

Next up we have Khalid who has been no stranger to the media in the recent months since he’s been killin it with his album and all the performances- including his crazy Santa Monica free concert that shut the pier down so it’s no surprise to us that he won for best new artist.  His performance was a medley of his wildly popular songs, ‘Location’ and ‘Young, Dumb, and Broke’ putting everyone in a light and happy mood.  This young artist may have just graduated high school but his recent streak of success shows that his career has just begun and he’s not planning on slowing down anytime soon.  Khalid took to Twitter to express his happiness about winning the award and his tweet shows his humble and sweet personality, you go Khalid!  We’re definitely rooting for you.
blog pic 4

The VMA’s are always entertaining and full of surprises so when Thirty Seconds to Mars performed with an unlikely collab partner- Travis Scott everyone was pleasantly surprised.  The rock band and the hiphop artist performed “Walk on Water” with a feature from Travis Scott’s song “Butterfly Effect” and the two different genres of music went well together  in a unique way.  The performance was interesting since all the artists were under a heat sensitive camera and no one expected Travis Scott to be featured in their song since they’re pretty different styles of music.  Thank you to Thirty Seconds to Mars for giving us the collab that we never knew we needed until now!

blog pic 5

Fifth Harmony’s performances have always been spicy and exciting but this time they were extra fierce in a different way.  As many of you readers may know, Fifth Harmony has had some drama with their ex-member Camila Carmelo since they all had a not-so-clean break up.  Reportedly Camila left the group to pursue her own solo career without telling the group and the group made it clear through their performance that they were doing just fine without her.  In the beginning of the pop girl group’s performance, there are clearly 5 silhouettes and within 5 seconds of the performance starting, the 5th person is thrown off stage.  Many fans noticed the group obviously throwing shade at the member who left and had mixed feelings about it.  However, the rest of Fifth Harmony’s performance was stunning as the girls danced in a futuristic setting since they were all wearing sparkly black and silver outfits and were dancing in glass boxes.

blog pic 6

However, not all performances are purely glitz and glam, we have to end our list of amazing performances with Logic’s.  His performance was simple and straight to the point, but it left a lasting impact on all the viewers.  He performed his hit song ‘1-800-273-8255’ and it was super meaningful because he draws attention to suicide prevention and the importance of mental health.  The song highlights that everyone feels lonely sometimes and that people should never feel like they’re alone while going through dark times because there are always going to be others who can be there for you.  Instead of having back up dancers in exaggerated costumes, the people in the background of Logic’s performance were suicide survivors that wore white T-shirts with the suicide hotline number (which is also the title of his song) written on the front, and his central message of “You are not alone” on the back.  Logic is the paradigm of a conscious celebrity by using fame in a positive manner through using his large platform to highlight social issues that need to be addressed and shedding light on important struggles.

blog pic 7

Last but certainly not least, the night was topped off this year with P!nk being chosen to the recipient of this years Video Vanguard award. This award honors an artist’s lifetime achievement within the music industry and it is considered the show’s highest honor. Following a hilarious introduction by Ellen Degeneres, P!nk graciously accepted the prestigious award and included in her acceptance speech a moving rendition of a conversation she had with her daughter. It touched on the importance of accepting and celebrating one’s true self and not bending nor conforming to society’s standards of beauty. Giving homage to gender norm defying music icons such as Michael Jackson and David Bowie for not only being true to themselves but for also paving the way for future artist, like herself, to do the same. Not only was her incredible speech moving but it rang true to everyone in the audience.

That’s a wrap for us on this year’s MTV VMA performances, we hope you enjoyed reading as much as we enjoyed writing this piece for you! If we didn’t touch on your favorite performance of the night, let us know what it was in the comments down below! Don’t forget to share with your friends 🙂

Wishing you the best today and every day,

5 Tips to Help You Prepare For Your First Day Back at School

The first day back at school after a long break always seems like a raging storm after a season of sunshine.  The stark difference between weekly beach trips and relaxing days to early morning classes and piles of homework can be pretty overwhelming and stressful.  However, us girls at Fab Design Co are here to help you get through the transition and hopefully the return back to school won’t be as bad as you anticipated.  Here are 5 tips to help prepare you for the first day back that will make you feel confident and prepared enough to conquer anything that the new school year brings!

1. Make sure you don’t procrastinate

If you have summer homework such as summer reading, get your butts to the beach or pool and hit the books!!  Summer reading doesn’t have to be such a drag because you can make it into a leisure activity if you are in your happy place and relax by the pool while you read about Santiago’s journey or Frankenstein’s struggle with self.  If you set a schedule for yourself in order to complete summer homework on time that will save you from the stress of trying to rush and finish everything the night before.

blog1.jpg

   2.  Get all the necessary school supplies needed in advance

I don’t know if it’s just me but getting new school supplies always gets me excited and is the upside of school starting.  There’s just something about perusing the aisles of Target or Staples and buying way too many unnecessary post-it notes that gives me in the spirit of school starting and helps me accept the end of summer a little bit more.  Not only is shopping for school supplies fun, it also helps a lot if you feel fully prepared with all the needed binders, notebooks, and pens.  Most people feel more excited to take notes in notebooks that they think are really cute so be sure to pick out things that speak to you or personalize your items to make everyday items more interesting.

blog2.jpg

 3. Try adjusting your sleeping schedule

Everyone’s sleeping schedule during the summer gets a little crazy because of long nights out with friends and little to no responsibilities during the day.  When school starts again it might be really hard to transition from sleeping at 2 am and waking up past noon to sleeping at 11pm and waking up before 8 am.  A better way to prevent such a harsh change would be to start sleeping earlier progressively a week or more before the first day of school.  For example, you could start by sleeping at 1 am on Monday and with each passing day of the week sleep an hour earlier than the day before.  The same can be done with the time you wake up each morning so you can slowly get used to early mornings again and the 8 am wake up alarm won’t be as horrible.

blog3.jpg

4. Pack a really good lunch and pick out a super cute outfit for the first day

As silly as this may sound, it is actually a very good way to motivate someone to go to school and build excitement for school starting.  When you know you are going to have a very filling and delicious meal, it helps fuel you through the day so you can finally munch on your meal with your friends.  Also, having an outfit that you really like is super important because it’ll help get you out of bed because nothing helps bring confidence like a good first day outfit!  These little motivators should be prepared the night before so you can wake up feeling ready to be reunited with all your classmates and friends after a summer of rejuvenation and growth.

blog4.jpg

5. Having a thorough and relaxing night routine

Speaking of “the night before”, there are several things you can do to relax yourself the night before school starts.  Taking a bubble bath is helpful because nothing is more relaxing than a nice warm tub with a lush bath bomb (am I right??).  After the bubble bath, you should do a facial mask to help keep your skin nice and smooth.  Lastly, listening to calming and chill music with candles in the room and do the final check on the contents of your backpack so you won’t be rushed in the morning to get packed.  Most importantly, just breathe and remember that you’re ready to take on whatever is thrown at you and that your friends and family will always be there for you in the midst of your new adventures.  A new school year can seem daunting but really, it’s just another thing for you to conquer so go out there and be the fabulous person that you are and I know you’ll be just fine.

Their signature black color is created naturally by using activated charcoal and sweetened naturally with sweet almonds. Their cones are even hand rolled and prepared fresh right as you order! For those who may not dig the whole black ice cream trend, they do offer pastel colored ice creams such as ‘unicorn tears’, ‘avocado dream’, and even a vegan offering, ‘mango sticky rice.’ So next time you’re in the DTLA area, grab yourself a cone (or two) and enjoy! Until then, you can drool over their Instagram feed like we’re doing right now.

2. Afters

Afters ice cream made it mark on the world with their now very popular Milky Bun. The Milky Bun consists of an oversized glazed donut stuffed with homemade ice cream and your choice of toppings. YUM! This ice cream shop, originally founded in Columbus, Ohio now has four locations across Los Angeles and 31 locations across the U.S., so they are definitely not amateurs to the ice cream business! You may be asking, who is Jeni? Jeni is the founder of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, and what makes her stand out above the rest of her fellow ice cream competitors is that she believes in using whole ingredients that come straight from their family farms in Ohio. Next time you’re looking for a sweet treat, stop by Jeni’s and treat yourself to a couple scoops!

Next up, Cauldron Ice Cream! This sweet treat shop is known for putting a cool twist on all their menu items. All of their ice cream is made using liquid nitrogen which yields a smooth and delicious treat. The shop cycles through different seasonal flavors so you’ll always have something new to try!

5. Grom

ice-cream-in-grom-galeto.jpg

Lastly, Grom is an old school gelato shop whose mission is to create gelato the old fashioned way without any artificial coloring and preservatives! On top of that their cool treats are made with mostly imported italian ingredients so it will be the closest thing to authentic Italian gelato without actually having to leave the continent. The Art of Brunching

Good afternoon to all of our FAB readers!  It’s 11:00 AM on a Sunday, so you know what that means…it’s brunch time!!!  As brunch enthusiasts, we have been to our fair share of great brunch spots and here are some of our favorites:

1) Blu Jam Cafe – Los Angeles

Brunch 5Brunch 6

If you’re an LA local, you’ve most likely heard of Blu Jam since it’s a popular and hot brunch spot that always has a long line, so be sure to go early!  A Blu Jam MUST is their crunchy french toast because the texture is amazing and the berries on the toast paired with the vanilla bean syrup make this dish delicious and leave you wanting more.  Personally, my favorite brunch food is eggs benedict so my next recommendation is Blu Jam’s Norwegian benedict: poached eggs and smoked salmon on an english muffin.  With crunchy potatoes on the side, this hearty meal will leave you stuffed and satisfied.

2) Republique- Los Angeles

Brunch 7Brunch 8

For a more classy and formal brunch place, you absolutely have to go to Republique because the atmosphere is delightful and aesthetically pleasing.  This spot has French inspired architecture with high ceilings and floor to ceiling windows that let light in, so it’s perfect for cute pictures and great conversations.  One of my favorite dishes from here is the Mushroom Toast which is toast with scrambled eggs. House-cured ham, mushrooms, and spinach on it.  This dish is very flavorful and rich because the mushroom pairs very well with all the other ingredients.  Another noteworthy dish is the Kimchi fried rice which has rice, beef short ribs, soft farm eggs, and kimchi.  This asian fusion dish is scrumptious because the beef short ribs are tender and the slightly sour taste of the crunchy kimchi pairs well with all the other flavors.

Now that you know where to brunch let’s talk about a few outfit ideas that are sure to be instagram worthy!

Brunch BlogBrunch Blog 2

A brunch outfit should be the perfect combination of laid back and chic. A sure fire way to accomplish this is to have one article of clothing be your main focal point. Think of Brunch as the perfect excuse to break out your fave sun dresses and over the shoulder tops. Both of these items can be easily paired with cute flats or high heels depending on the look you’re going for. Finally, keep accessories to a minimum by simply adding a statement watch or a dainty necklace and of course your fave sunnies. And just like that, you are ready to head out the door and brunch to your heart’s content!

Finally, we’d like to give a shoutout to all the DIY lovers of the world and give you a few tips and tricks to nail your next DIY Brunch get together! When we think of Brunch the first thing that pops into mind is food… and lots of it. So here we have for you guys a few easy recipes that are sure to be a hit!

Mixology: Our Favorite DIY Summer Cocktails

I must share the love of these refreshing cocktails that are simply FAB!  Not only are they pretty but they taste DELISH.  Super simple to make…and let’s be real, if you’re crazy busy like me, then this is criteria #1, and they taste waaaaay better then those powder-based or pre-mixed drinks at the store.  Add 1, 2, or all of these easy-to-make drinks to your spirit survival list this summer and impress your guests, create a signature drink for your next shindig, or unwind alone or with Bae after a long day.  And of course, if you’ll be taking your cool creations on the road to the beach, music festival, picnic or whatever, we’ve got the PERFECT drinkware for you!  Let us know your favs…I’ll be making a few of these with my girls at our next “wine”down. Cheers!

1. Pineapple Rum Punch

blog_pineapplerum

You may already have your go-to party punch favs but here’s another quick and easy refreshing one that you can quickly whip up on a hot day or for family and friends. You’ll need 3 cups of chilled Canada Dry® Ginger Ale, 3 cups of pineapple juice, 1 cup of Malibu Rum and fresh pineapple chunks (optional) for garnish.  Simply add the ginger ale, pineapple juice and rum over ice and serve with skewers of fresh pineapple chunks as garnish.

2. Pink Grapefruit Mojito

blog_pinkgrapefruit_mojito

It’s no secret that a glass of wine, preferably a nice Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir, will probably always be my drink of choice.  But when it comes to cocktails, my favs tend to be well-made mojitos are slight variations.  I discovered this recipe about a year ago on Pinch of Yum and this puckery perfection with limes, mint and of course, yummy pink grapefruit juice sweetened with honey remains in heavy rotation. I think you’ll love it!

3. Bourbon Mint Lemonade

blog_bourbonmint_lemonade

You don’t have to be a whiskey drinker to LOVE this yummy adult lemonade. AND it only requires 3 ingredients: bourbon, mint and Simply Lemonade juice drink.  Mix up a pitcher for your next summer BBQ or girls night in for a light and refreshing cocktail.

4. Peach Moscato Wine Slushies

blog_peachmoscatoslusie

Just grab a bottle of your favorite sweet dessert wine, some fresh peaches (or your favorite fruit), powdered sugar and boom…you will have a SUPER refreshing cocktail! An added bonus is that you can make it ahead of time, freeze it, and have cool drinks ready to go in no time.  Make it a virgin by using sparkling white grape juice.  Click here to get the full recipe from Divas Can Cook.

5. Skinny Lime Margaritas

blog_skinnymargarita2

First things first…you only need 4 main ingredients to make this margarita on the rocks and guess what, there is no Triple Sec or processed sugar! If you’re like me and you love margaritas but hate how sugary and processed they tend to be, then you’ll love that this cocktail only includes natural ingredients: 1 mint, 1/2 cup lime juice, 2 tbsp maple syrup, 1 shot of tequila + 1 cup water, ice and salt (to rim the glass if you like).  Simply combine everything starting with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup (add more if you like it sweeter).  Then whisk together and pour over ice into two glasses. Garnish with fresh mint and salt the rims (optional).  Perfect for Taco Tuesdays and only about 100 calories per serving.

6. Strawberry Rosé Sangria

blog_strawberryrose_sangria

If it’s summertime, then you must have Sangria on your cocktail list! This sangria recipe from Jennifer Meyering has a little bit of a twist because it includes lemon-lime soda and vodka in addition to your favorite bottle of rosé wine which makes a light, refreshing, fruity drink that’s not too sweet. I love it!

7. Pineapple Coconut Mojito

blog_pineapplecoconut_mojito

This island treat includes 2 tbsp lime juice, 1/2 cup La Croix lime sparkling water, one 6-oz can pineapple juice, 4 oz Rum and a 1/2 cup coconut water.  Add the lime to the coconut juice then add the other ingredients and shake it all up.  That’s it!  You can give yourself a mini-vacation anytime. Serves 2.
