Fall Favorites

Wow, time flies when you’re having fun…summer has passed by in a whirlwind and now it’s already September.  Even though summer is over, the good thing about September is that it is officially the start of pumpkin spice lattes, winter outfits, holidays, and fall foods.  In other words, it is the beginning of fall season!!!!  Here are some of our favorites that showcase why we’re so excited for this fall season.

First, of course we are pumped to now be able to have one of the signature flavors that is only available during the fall:  pumpkin spice! Nothing gets you quicker into the holiday spirit than sipping on Pumpkin Spice Latte which tastes like Christmas in a cup.  Whether you get it from Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or even make it fresh at home you can’t go wrong with this flavorful drink. And if, like us, you’re still stuck in summer like weather then opt for the iced version which happens to be just as delicious!

fall favs blog pic 1.jpg

Another amazing treat that you can only get during the fall season is a pumpkin spice cupcake.  We found this amazing recipe that is all but mistake proof. Tested and tried these cupcakes will be the perfect sweet treat to get you in the holiday spirit.

Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

Serves: 24 cupcakes and 2 cups frosting

INGREDIENTS

For the cupcakes:

  • 1 (16.25-ounce) spice cake mix
  • 1 (15-ounce) can pure pumpkin puree
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ cup water
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • Prepared cream cheese frosting or use the frosting recipe below
  • ¼ cup toasted pecans for topping (optional)

For the frosting:

  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, softened
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered confectioners sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

For the cupcakes:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Place cupcake liners in 24 muffin cups (or grease muffin cups).
  2. Blend cake mix, pumpkin puree, eggs, water and oil in a large bowl at low speed until moistened. Increase speed to medium and beat for an additional 2 minutes.
  3. Pour batter into muffin cups evenly (about ¾ full).
  4. Bake for 19-22 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted is removed clean.
  5. Cool on wire rack for at least 10 minutes. Cool completely before frosting.

For the frosting:

  1. In a large bowl using electric mixer at medium speed, beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla together until smooth and creamy, about 1 minute.
  2. Slowly add powdered sugar and beat until incorporated well. Increase speed to high and beat until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes.
  3. Frost cupcakes and top with toasted pecans, if desired.

Not only does fall bring you amazing drinks and sweets, it also finally allows you to switch out your tanks and shorts for comfy jeans and sweaters.  I don’t know if it’s just me but sweaters and jeggings are my favorite combination because with the right sweater, your outfit can be both cute and comfortable which is the most important part.  If it’s a little colder in your area, you can always accessorize with scarves, beanies, or gloves and always remember to layer, layer, layer!  Layering is super essential to packing in the heat for cold days but when it’s done right, it can also make an outfit look super put together and fashionable.  My closet essentials for layering are: flannels, thin hoodies, patterned scarves, and knee high socks.  For example, if you want to wear a cute tank top, layer with a flannel and a jacket and you’ll be able to showcase your summer shirt without the cost of being too cold.  Also, knee high socks layered over sheer leggings also give a cute and girly look when you want to wear a dress without exposing your legs to windy weather.

Lastly, the start of fall means that we’re getting closer and closer to the Holidays and that’s always something to look forward to.  Now that it’s September, the countdown to Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years has begun and we can’t wait to get festive with our family and friends! Comment down below if, like us, you can’t wait to get into this year’s holiday spirit, and don’t forget to share with your friends so they too can get in the mood. 🙂

Wishing you all the best!

Our September FAB Woman of the Month

Welcome back for another FAB woman of the month feature! This month, we would like you to meet Christina, one of the founders of apparel company Citizen & Darling, who’s mission is to help put an end to human trafficking.  With her business partner, Karina, these two ladies have shown the apparel world that they are true goal-getters and girl-bosses!

Tell us a little bit about Citizen & Darling and what inspired you to start it?

Citizen & Darling is an ethical apparel brand that focuses on bringing awareness to Human trafficking, specifically in Los Angeles. My friend Karina (now business partner) was really devastated when she learned about human trafficking a few years back and its connection to the fashion industry. She had gone to school at FIDM and I had a background in psychology as well as working with the needy through various mission trips, and once she shared her understanding of human trafficking we wanted to collaborate our strengths for change. We wanted to provide a message of hope, value, and purpose- ultimately inspired from our faith, as a means of restoring the identity that is commonly skewed in those coming out of human trafficking, but also as a prevention tool for those vulnerable and susceptible as well.

Who is your inspiration and what do they inspire in you?

Our inspiration mainly comes from our Christian faith. As Christians we feel like it is our responsibility to put an end to injustices we see happening, and this specific one hits far too close to home. Human trafficking is also something that violates our most basic rights, and has a mindset that takes away the human element. Because we feel people are created in Gods image, that is the ultimate offense and we have been determined to help put an end to it.
We were also inspired by the documentary- The True Cost. It is a great documentary that exposes how the fashion industry is contributing to slave labor all around the world, but also gives a powerful insight on how to make a change.
We have also been inspired by the brand- Krochet Kids. Krochet Kids because they proved that the fashion industry can change people’s lives for good- that perseverance can really change the world.
A21’s founder Christine Cane because her testimony has shown the beauty of transformation that is possible. She is someone who has rescued thousands of human trafficking survivors around the world through her organization A21 Campaign, and used her own transformation and redemption story as a way to help those coming out of slavery restore their lives.
We are also inspired by some fellow brands of ours- UNCVRD Jewelry, and The Tote Project, who are ran by women here in Los Angeles that have a passion for the fight of human trafficking and creating sustainable products that not only give back, but fight against fast fashion.

Why do you think diversity is important in the fashion industry or any industry?

I think diversity is very important in all industries. Different strengths and talents need to shine, and for the fashion industry specifically, diversity is what prevents it from being boring and flat, and bringing new beauty. Everyone has a story to tell, and fashion is a great way to show that because our clothes can represent us as individuals.  We believe that diversity is an expression of Gods creation and that should be celebrated.

IMG_5717

What do you feel is the most important aspect when expressing yourself through social media?

The biggest point we want to get across through our social media is that God loves you just the way you are. You are accepted, and there is so much freedom in that. Freedom to enjoy life, but also to recognize and refuse to accept that that same narrative is taken away for so many people around the world. We also like to celebrate our beautiful Los Angeles, because we love the people and the culture here, and we want to change LA into an anti-trafficking city who really loves people. And lastly, that sustainable fashion can look just as beautiful and trendy as fast fashion.

Is there anything you wish to inspire in others?

We want to be a brand that people associate with hope and value, and make it accessible for anyone and everyone to pass that message of hope. That you are wonderfully made, that you are beloved, that you are seen as darling in Gods eyes, that you are a citizen of His Kingdom. Ultimately, even human trafficking cannot take those things away from you. We hope that Citizen&Darling helps strengthen the movement of slow fashion, and investing in our clothes the same way we invest in each other. That everyone has the ability to end human trafficking in small ways. Most people would never want to contribute to human trafficking if they were given a choice, but unfortunately that is what happens when we support brands that use slave labor. So if anything, we want to inspire others to start choosing your purchases to reflect your values.

What advice do you have for younger girls who are looking to pursue their dreams?

My advice would be not to be so hard on yourself while trying to get off the ground. There were so many times I never thought Citizen & Darling would happen, and then someone told me that in order for everyone else to believe in your brand, you have to first. If you are truly passionate about something, it doesn’t have to be perfect in order to work. You learn as you go, and there really is a lot of amazing possibilities out there. I would also say – don’t compare yourself to others. With social media especially it’s so easy to look at someone else and think they have it more together than you, but honestly- in my experience most people also feel that way, and each person has something unique and special to bring to the table. Never stop trying.

MTV VMA’s Performance Recap

Welcome back to all of our FAB readers! We are back and better than ever to give you guys the load down on this year’s MTV VMAs.  With plenty of memorable performances throughout the night, we can’t wait to get started and fill you all in.

blog pic 2

First up is the one and only Kendrick Lamar. He took a grand total of 6 awards throughout the night, finally breaking his running losing streak. However what really captured and held our attention was his unique and powerful performance of the night. His performance, which included his rendition of his top 5 hits to date, was truly notable as not just visually stunning, with ninja’s climbing burning scaffold as he rapped, but politically stunning as well. Kendrick Lamar chose to keep a sample of Fox’s The Five, in which they criticised his 2015 BET showing, as the opener to his hit track DNA. While this performance wasn’t as politically charged as some of his past ones were, it still made it clear to all in attendance that he will remain politically active in all aspects of his career including performances.

Blog Pic 3

Next up we have Khalid who has been no stranger to the media in the recent months since he’s been killin it with his album and all the performances- including his crazy Santa Monica free concert that shut the pier down so it’s no surprise to us that he won for best new artist.  His performance was a medley of his wildly popular songs, ‘Location’ and ‘Young, Dumb, and Broke’ putting everyone in a light and happy mood.  This young artist may have just graduated high school but his recent streak of success shows that his career has just begun and he’s not planning on slowing down anytime soon.  Khalid took to Twitter to express his happiness about winning the award and his tweet shows his humble and sweet personality, you go Khalid!  We’re definitely rooting for you.
blog pic 4

The VMA’s are always entertaining and full of surprises so when Thirty Seconds to Mars performed with an unlikely collab partner- Travis Scott everyone was pleasantly surprised.  The rock band and the hiphop artist performed “Walk on Water” with a feature from Travis Scott’s song “Butterfly Effect” and the two different genres of music went well together  in a unique way.  The performance was interesting since all the artists were under a heat sensitive camera and no one expected Travis Scott to be featured in their song since they’re pretty different styles of music.  Thank you to Thirty Seconds to Mars for giving us the collab that we never knew we needed until now!

blog pic 5

Fifth Harmony’s performances have always been spicy and exciting but this time they were extra fierce in a different way.  As many of you readers may know, Fifth Harmony has had some drama with their ex-member Camila Carmelo since they all had a not-so-clean break up.  Reportedly Camila left the group to pursue her own solo career without telling the group and the group made it clear through their performance that they were doing just fine without her.  In the beginning of the pop girl group’s performance, there are clearly 5 silhouettes and within 5 seconds of the performance starting, the 5th person is thrown off stage.  Many fans noticed the group obviously throwing shade at the member who left and had mixed feelings about it.  However, the rest of Fifth Harmony’s performance was stunning as the girls danced in a futuristic setting since they were all wearing sparkly black and silver outfits and were dancing in glass boxes.

blog pic 6

However, not all performances are purely glitz and glam, we have to end our list of amazing performances with Logic’s.  His performance was simple and straight to the point, but it left a lasting impact on all the viewers.  He performed his hit song ‘1-800-273-8255’ and it was super meaningful because he draws attention to suicide prevention and the importance of mental health.  The song highlights that everyone feels lonely sometimes and that people should never feel like they’re alone while going through dark times because there are always going to be others who can be there for you.  Instead of having back up dancers in exaggerated costumes, the people in the background of Logic’s performance were suicide survivors that wore white T-shirts with the suicide hotline number (which is also the title of his song) written on the front, and his central message of “You are not alone” on the back.  Logic is the paradigm of a conscious celebrity by using fame in a positive manner through using his large platform to highlight social issues that need to be addressed and shedding light on important struggles.

blog pic 7

Last but certainly not least, the night was topped off this year with P!nk being chosen to the recipient of this years Video Vanguard award. This award honors an artist’s lifetime achievement within the music industry and it is considered the show’s highest honor. Following a hilarious introduction by Ellen Degeneres, P!nk graciously accepted the prestigious award and included in her acceptance speech a moving rendition of a conversation she had with her daughter. It touched on the importance of accepting and celebrating one’s true self and not bending nor conforming to society’s standards of beauty. Giving homage to gender norm defying music icons such as Michael Jackson and David Bowie for not only being true to themselves but for also paving the way for future artist, like herself, to do the same. Not only was her incredible speech moving but it rang true to everyone in the audience.

That’s a wrap for us on this year’s MTV VMA performances, we hope you enjoyed reading as much as we enjoyed writing this piece for you! If we didn’t touch on your favorite performance of the night, let us know what it was in the comments down below! Don’t forget to share with your friends 🙂

Wishing you the best today and every day,

San Francisco

Next up is the one and only San Francisco. Having been there a couple of times, we can honestly say there are endless things to do! From visiting Chinatown to the world famous Golden Gate Bridge, you’ll definitely want to keep coming back to this fun town. If you are planning an overnight stay look into AirBNBs all over the San Fran area, you’ll be sure to find something that fits your needs while not breaking the bank. Although if hotels are more your style than we highly recommend the Hotel Nikko as well as the Grand Hyatt, both of which were amazingly accommodating and luxurious. Finally, a San Fran trip isn’t complete without a trip down to Pier 39 for the famous and utterly scrumptious Clam Chowder located at the Pier Market Seafood Restaurant.

Palm Springs

Ahh Palm Springs, yes while it may get ridiculously hot over the summer, we can’t help but love everything about it from the architecture to the colors! When it comes to finding a place to stay in Palm Springs, you have quite the selection of aesthetically pleasing places to choose from. There’s The Parker, The Saguaro, The Ace Hotel and a huge assortment of beautiful AirBNBs. Aside from having an amazing assortment of beautiful hotels to choose from, Palm Springs’ dining and shopping selections do no disappoint as well. Our favorite places for food are Cheeky’s, Workshop Kitchen and Jake’s! Oh and while you’re in Palm Springs you can’t forget to take a picture with the iconic PINK DOOR!

Palm Springs

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is definitely one of the biggest tourist locations in California, and for good reason! From their breathtaking coastal views, their Spanish inspired buildings, and their variety of delicious food and lively entertainment offerings. For our fellow wine lovers, Santa Barbara is known for their stunning vineyards. Our favorite is Municipal Winemakers – it’s a more casual winery, so don’t be afraid to show up in your shorts and flip-flops, but they certainly do not lack quality when it comes to their wines! After a day of wine tasting, we recommend checking out Downtown along State Street where you can find different boutiques, fine dining restaurants, and galleries.

Santa Barbara

Ojai

Picturesque and quaint Ojai is located just outside of Santa Barbara. Tucked away in the mountains, it is definitely a place where many people visit to be able to unplug from the rest of the world and completely relax. We recommend checking in to the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa or the Ojai Rancho Inn for your weekend vacay.  And if you’re a fan of all things organic and healthy, then stop on by Farmer and the Cook. All their food is made using local ingredients and is vegan friendly! After a long day of exploring, you’ll want to stop on by to Azu – a Spanish/Mediterranean restaurant that not only serves up refreshing cocktails, but some of the best tapas you’ll ever have!

5 Tips to Help You Prepare For Your First Day Back at School

The first day back at school after a long break always seems like a raging storm after a season of sunshine.  The stark difference between weekly beach trips and relaxing days to early morning classes and piles of homework can be pretty overwhelming and stressful.  However, us girls at Fab Design Co are here to help you get through the transition and hopefully the return back to school won’t be as bad as you anticipated.  Here are 5 tips to help prepare you for the first day back that will make you feel confident and prepared enough to conquer anything that the new school year brings!

1. Make sure you don’t procrastinate

If you have summer homework such as summer reading, get your butts to the beach or pool and hit the books!!  Summer reading doesn’t have to be such a drag because you can make it into a leisure activity if you are in your happy place and relax by the pool while you read about Santiago’s journey or Frankenstein’s struggle with self.  If you set a schedule for yourself in order to complete summer homework on time that will save you from the stress of trying to rush and finish everything the night before.

blog1.jpg

   2.  Get all the necessary school supplies needed in advance

I don’t know if it’s just me but getting new school supplies always gets me excited and is the upside of school starting.  There’s just something about perusing the aisles of Target or Staples and buying way too many unnecessary post-it notes that gives me in the spirit of school starting and helps me accept the end of summer a little bit more.  Not only is shopping for school supplies fun, it also helps a lot if you feel fully prepared with all the needed binders, notebooks, and pens.  Most people feel more excited to take notes in notebooks that they think are really cute so be sure to pick out things that speak to you or personalize your items to make everyday items more interesting.

blog2.jpg

 3. Try adjusting your sleeping schedule

Everyone’s sleeping schedule during the summer gets a little crazy because of long nights out with friends and little to no responsibilities during the day.  When school starts again it might be really hard to transition from sleeping at 2 am and waking up past noon to sleeping at 11pm and waking up before 8 am.  A better way to prevent such a harsh change would be to start sleeping earlier progressively a week or more before the first day of school.  For example, you could start by sleeping at 1 am on Monday and with each passing day of the week sleep an hour earlier than the day before.  The same can be done with the time you wake up each morning so you can slowly get used to early mornings again and the 8 am wake up alarm won’t be as horrible.

blog3.jpg

4. Pack a really good lunch and pick out a super cute outfit for the first day

As silly as this may sound, it is actually a very good way to motivate someone to go to school and build excitement for school starting.  When you know you are going to have a very filling and delicious meal, it helps fuel you through the day so you can finally munch on your meal with your friends.  Also, having an outfit that you really like is super important because it’ll help get you out of bed because nothing helps bring confidence like a good first day outfit!  These little motivators should be prepared the night before so you can wake up feeling ready to be reunited with all your classmates and friends after a summer of rejuvenation and growth.

blog4.jpg

5. Having a thorough and relaxing night routine

Speaking of “the night before”, there are several things you can do to relax yourself the night before school starts.  Taking a bubble bath is helpful because nothing is more relaxing than a nice warm tub with a lush bath bomb (am I right??).  After the bubble bath, you should do a facial mask to help keep your skin nice and smooth.  Lastly, listening to calming and chill music with candles in the room and do the final check on the contents of your backpack so you won’t be rushed in the morning to get packed.  Most importantly, just breathe and remember that you’re ready to take on whatever is thrown at you and that your friends and family will always be there for you in the midst of your new adventures.  A new school year can seem daunting but really, it’s just another thing for you to conquer so go out there and be the fabulous person that you are and I know you’ll be just fine.

FAB Woman of the Month – August 2017

Jennifer Bower of Huntington Beach, CA is this month’s FAB woman of the month! We are so excited to introduce her to all of our FAB readers! This hardworking woman is not only a full time mom, caring wife, and fun girlfriend, she is also the Deputy Fire Marshal of the Orange County Fire Authority.  In the midst of all her responsibilities, she was able to fit us into her schedule to share with us not only how she got to where she is today but also what it takes to get there. Her amazing work ethic and drive to always do more has propelled her through the ranks to be in the position where she is today, making her in our eyes truly FABULOUS!

Who do you admire most and why?

From a career standpoint, I would have to say my great aunt who my father admired as well. She was a gay nurse during the war who in her spare time volunteered for planned parenthood. She didn’t let a thing like being gay, which at that time was a dangerous thing to be, stop her from doing what she felt was right and lending a hand where she could. She had her mind set on getting the job done regardless of the obstacles.

What is your official job title and what are some of your responsibilities?

I am the Deputy Fire Marshal in the Orange County Fire Authority. On my end, I control all of the permitting for special events in parks [such as fairs], annual inspections, and complaints. I have 35 people reporting to me under my department.

blog_jenniferbower1

Throughout your career, what steps did you take that ultimately lead you to the position you are in now?

I always had drive. I was never satisfied with where I sat, and when I looked at other people [in their careers] I always thought “I could do that.” So whether it was in my career or stuff that I did, I always wanted to try and do things, not necessarily to be an expert, but to try something new and not get bored. So the advantage of the position I am in is it’s  always a different challenge, it is not the same thing, it’s not mundane.

Why do you think diversity is important to showcase within a male dominated industry?

Well, it’s not a matter of women and men are the same, That’s a matter of capabilities and recognizing people’s capabilities, and putting them in the best place for their skill set regardless of whether their male or female. From a gender standpoint, to me it doesn’t matter.  From an ethnic background, or from an ethnic standpoint, the more the merrier. The more diverse that you are, the more differences of opinions, the more perspectives you have, the better you can be as a team. Everybody brings their own expertise.

blog_jenniferbower2

What advice do you give anyone looking to join the fire department?

Don’t be shy. Come and talk, come and ride along. Come and see the different areas. What people don’t realize about fire service specifically, is that it’s a city in and of itself. We have a finance division, we have a fleet services division, we have a training division, we have a bunch of different divisions. So you can bring whatever expertise you thought you were gonna go into, like if you thought you were gonna be a CPA in a firm, you can come and be a CPA for the fire service instead.

What does it mean to you to live a FABULOUS life?

To live a fabulous life to me means living to your fullest potential. What I mean by that is not being satisfied with your own bare minimum. It’s taking whatever skill set you have and using your own foresight to plan out a bigger goal for yourself, and then going out and accomplishing those goals. You do what you do because you love what you do, and because you know your doing the best that you can do. That is a life lived fabulously.
