The Art of Brunching

Good afternoon to all of our FAB readers!  It’s 11:00 AM on a Sunday, so you know what that means…it’s brunch time!!!  As brunch enthusiasts, we have been to our fair share of great brunch spots and here are some of our favorites:

1) Blu Jam Cafe – Los Angeles

Brunch 5Brunch 6

If you’re an LA local, you’ve most likely heard of Blu Jam since it’s a popular and hot brunch spot that always has a long line, so be sure to go early!  A Blu Jam MUST is their crunchy french toast because the texture is amazing and the berries on the toast paired with the vanilla bean syrup make this dish delicious and leave you wanting more.  Personally, my favorite brunch food is eggs benedict so my next recommendation is Blu Jam’s Norwegian benedict: poached eggs and smoked salmon on an english muffin.  With crunchy potatoes on the side, this hearty meal will leave you stuffed and satisfied.

2) Republique- Los Angeles

Brunch 7Brunch 8

For a more classy and formal brunch place, you absolutely have to go to Republique because the atmosphere is delightful and aesthetically pleasing.  This spot has French inspired architecture with high ceilings and floor to ceiling windows that let light in, so it’s perfect for cute pictures and great conversations.  One of my favorite dishes from here is the Mushroom Toast which is toast with scrambled eggs. House-cured ham, mushrooms, and spinach on it.  This dish is very flavorful and rich because the mushroom pairs very well with all the other ingredients.  Another noteworthy dish is the Kimchi fried rice which has rice, beef short ribs, soft farm eggs, and kimchi.  This asian fusion dish is scrumptious because the beef short ribs are tender and the slightly sour taste of the crunchy kimchi pairs well with all the other flavors.

Now that you know where to brunch let’s talk about a few outfit ideas that are sure to be instagram worthy!

Brunch BlogBrunch Blog 2

A brunch outfit should be the perfect combination of laid back and chic. A sure fire way to accomplish this is to have one article of clothing be your main focal point. Think of Brunch as the perfect excuse to break out your fave sun dresses and over the shoulder tops. Both of these items can be easily paired with cute flats or high heels depending on the look you’re going for. Finally, keep accessories to a minimum by simply adding a statement watch or a dainty necklace and of course your fave sunnies. And just like that, you are ready to head out the door and brunch to your heart’s content!

Finally, we’d like to give a shoutout to all the DIY lovers of the world and give you a few tips and tricks to nail your next DIY Brunch get together! When we think of Brunch the first thing that pops into mind is food… and lots of it. So here we have for you guys a few easy recipes that are sure to be a hit!

Treat Yo Self: 7 Ways to Refresh, Recharge and Rejuvenate!

Do you ever feel like you’re always on the go, running, doing, being pulled in multiple directions or constantly wearing multiple hats?  Is your mind always ON?  Feeling low energy, stressed or guilty or that there’s never enough time in the day?  Do you seem to find time for everything and everyone but yourself?  Whether it’s work, class, kids, family, finances, relationships, projects…it’s easy to lose ourselves in the thick of everyday life.  Spoiler Alert – we don’t have all the answers or remedies, nor are we suggesting that all of these driving forces will change but we DO have some self-care tips to help you stay FAB along the way that don’t totally interrupt your schedule or flow.

1. Prioritize Getting Some ZZZZs – We know…easier said than done when we’ve become a society that burns the candle at both ends.  People stay up all night to study, work, or have fun. We think we can all agree that you feel better after getting a good night’s sleep but it’s deeper than that.  Harvard studies indicate that going without adequate sleep (7 – 9 hours) can have short-term results such as affects on judgment, mood, ability to learn and retain information, and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injury.  In the long term, chronic sleep deprivation may lead to a host of health problems including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even early mortality.  Additional benefits of sleep are improved memory, reduced inflammation which is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and premature aging, more creativity, sharpened attention, and LESS STRESS.  Need we say more?  Set expectations about when your day will end for yourself and others and then shut things down.  Try to go to bed around the same time nightly to create a habit for your mind and body.

2. UNPLUG – Don’t be mad at the messenger…we get it. How many of us really work from 9-5 these days, and sometimes it seems as if our lives hinge on the information we’re receiving, watching, storing, communicating with our cell phones, television, and devices.  And yes, when it comes to FOMO (fear of missing out), the struggle is real!  But research shows that the advantages of powering down and having time and space to create, to rest our minds, be present, and have real (not virtual) connections with family, friends, and other people are REALLY important to enhancing the quality of life and in some instances our health.  That means we have to be deliberate in creating new habits. Here are a few suggestions we found:

  • Have Designated Check Out Times – Schedule your unplug time during the day and if you need to set an alarm to remind yourself to take 15 minutes to close your laptop, shut off your phone, etc., then do so.  Do this for longer periods on the weekends and get the whole family involved!
  • Power Down at Night – Disconnect from technology before bed. Research shows that we need to give our brains a chance to unwind for a more restful sleep.
  • Have a Phone-Free Meal Policy – Instead of looking at phones or the TV, take this time to talk about (or reflect on) your day, share stories, laugh, and problem solve about whatever is going on. Be present, enjoy the meal and connect.
  • Set Boundaries and Share Them – Communicate your new behaviors to friends, co-workers, and family to manage expectations and have more control of your time and what you give energy to.
  • Have Other Options for Enjoyment – Create outlets other than technology.  Instead of watching Netflix for an hour, read a book.  Instead of playing a game on an app, do yoga, meditate, go for a walk or take a bubble bath.

3. Schedule a Date With Yourself – We have a saying here…Always be FLY (First Loving Yourself).  The same way we schedule activities, say yes to signup sheets at school, volunteer, make plans for Bae, friends and family, we can pencil in some time for ourselves to do whatever we enjoy or absolutely nothing.  The actual definition of Me Time is time spent relaxing on one’s own as opposed to working or doing things for others, seen as an opportunity to reduce stress or restore energy.  Well, if you’re waiting for your schedule to clear, things to slow down, less work, the perfect opportunity, more time in the day before you enjoy a little Me Time, it may never happen.  Put it on your calendar and treat it as an appointment that you have to keep. Make the necessary arrangements for the kids and/or spouse and avoid any guilt for taking some Me Time. You NEED it and DESERVE it.

4. Say NO – It sounds simple and it can be but it’s difficult to find the time to refresh and recharge when you’re overbooked, over-committed, and stressed out about doing things that you don’t really want to do.  So saying “no” is about setting limits and releasing yourself from guilt.  Lisa Dunbar, author of The Upside of Saying No says that this practice starts with (1) accepting your right to say no and (2) uncovering organizational beliefs around values and work/life balance.  Remember, we ARE super women but we don’t have to be Superwomen to all people and all things all the time.  It’s okay to take our capes off in exchange for some extra time for ourselves and the things we enjoy.

5. Plan Ahead FOR REAL – Do you know someone who is ALWAYS late? Or maybe that someone is you.  Don’t worry, we’re not judging but it’s the perfect example of creating unnecessary stress on yourself or on others by not keeping it all the way 100 when scheduling your time.  If you have a meeting at 5:00, can you really meet your girlfriend for happy hour at 6:30 across town? Let’s think about it…even if the meeting wraps at 5:30 (unlikely), you still have to consider the lingering good-bye/small talk that may occur afterwards, walking to your car or catching an Uber/taxi, rush-hour traffic, parking, walking from your car to the venue, etc.  We’re stressed out just thinking about the added pressure of trying to be only a little late versus a lot late which is more likely because the plan wasn’t realistic.  See where we’re going with this?  Time management isn’t just a skill to include on a resume.  Practicing good, realistic time management will increase your productivity and timeliness while reducing situations that cause you to sleep less, eat poorly, fail to meet expectations, and have added stress, anxiety or pressure.

6. Pay Attention to What You Eat/Drink – Let’s face it, everyone isn’t meant to be a size 2 or 10 or 14 but we can’t ignore the facts that what we put into our bodies affects us beyond our weight.  When you’re 21 you may be able to live on pizza and cocktails and still fit into your favorite jeans and also function at optimal levels throughout the day but for everyone else…probably not so much.  Our motto at the studio is to enjoy everything in moderation so we’re not going to be super preachy when it comes to diet.  BUT it’s been proven that eating more lean meats, vegetables, fruit, and whole grains and less foods that are processed or high in added sugar, saturated fat and sodium leads to more energy, increased productivity, enhanced moods, weight regulation, longer lifespan, and better health.

7. Gratitude Journaling – Take a few minutes at the end of each day (or week if daily seems impossible) to focus on what’s good in your life and write them down. This simple task forces you to shift your thoughts in a way that’s positive which has an amazing effect on your overall mood.

Met Gala Hairstyle Crushes

As always, when it comes to FAB fashion, this year’s Met Gala did not disappoint!  So much style inspiration in the forever-fashionable NYC but let’s not forget the hair.  These artful dos had me screaming yaaaaaaaas!

Zendaya. Yes, of course her Dolce & Gabbana gown is beautiful but let’s keep it completely real…it’s the compliment of her big voluptuous natural hair that makes her style aesthetic eye-catching perfection.

Thandie Newton.  With creole earrings, smoky eye make-up perfection and a flower adorned headpiece, this FAB mother of three keeps your attention from head to toe.

Cara Delevingne amped up the buzz-cut she’s rocking for her role in Life in a Year with metallic silver paint for a dramatic futuristic look that makes her an elegant sci-fi fashion fantasy come true.

Lala Anthony.  You know how you always want to look fierce on the day that you run into your ex no matter how long it’s been?  Well even though this fashion statement is all about Lala looking simply FAB and being “Unbreakable” (as described in her Instagram photo above), we still have two words… MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Rita Ora. I’ll admit that her beautiful bling drew me in close but it was her edgy textured hair that became the conversation piece.  LOVE this brilliant hair design by César DeLeön Ramirez.

Five FAB Breakfast Spots in DTLA

Our studio is in the heart of the Fashion District in Downtown LA and not only do we love the energy, art, creativity and culture…we also LOVE the food. They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, correct? Therefore, breakfast should never be boring. Thankfully, being located in Downtown Los Angeles has given us the opportunity to be fortunate enough to try dozens of different breakfast and brunch spots. However, we decided to compile a small list of four of our favorite spots that won’t be overcrowded and are sure to meet even your highest breakfast standards.

1. Faith and Flower

Faith and Flower is, in my humble opinion, the best brunch hidden gem. While most spots have crazy wait-times or require reservations, I was able to show up here on a Sunday afternoon and be seated right away. The outdoor and indoor seating is equally enjoyable. Their menus are inside actual books – so cool! Their food is meant to be shared – so, order several plates for the group and enjoy all of the different and delicious food they offer.

2. Far Bar

If you can find Far Bar, you’ll be in brunch heaven. There is a normal entrance, but that’s no fun, right? The outdoor seating to this restaurant has a secret entrance that you would miss if you were just walking by and not looking for it. Between two large buildings is a small passage just large enough for a person to go through. Once you walk all the way down, you’ll arrive in their outdoor seating area, all complete with hanging lights and sparkly plants.

3. Syrup Desserts

Syrup has an amazing selection of different types of waffles. But, the best part about this place is that you can add scoops of ice cream to your waffles. Because why not have dessert for breakfast?

4. Wake & Late

Four words: Best. Breakfast. Burrito. Ever. This restaurant is small and has an even smaller menu – but that’s a good thing, because that means they do those few things really, really well. They’re open really early – then close for the middle of the day – and then open up late again for those 1AM breakfast burrito cravings.

5. Bottega Louie

You may know them for their absolutely delightful macarons packaged in colorful gift boxes but Bottega Louie also has a bomb breakfast menu that will leave you wanting more.  Favorites include the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and French Toast with strawberry compote and almonds.

Five FAB Activities that Don’t Require a Bra #NationalNoBraDay

Today, October 13th, we dare you to do the unthinkable: leave your bra at home! While the entire month of October is dedicated as being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, today is exceptionally special as being National No Bra Day. Today we are aiming to bring more awareness to the importance of breast cancer screening, recognizing symptoms, performing self-examinations, and supporting survivors. We not only encourage you to get active on social media and join the #nobraday movement in celebration of National No Bra Day, but to actually get out today and celebrate the day braless! Lucky for you, we’ve already created a cool (but not all-inclusive) list of Fab Five things you can do that don’t require a bra.

1.  Binge-watch Netflix

Why not make the most of national no bra day by throwing on your favorite pair of sweats and binge watching your current obsession on Netflix. Nothing embodies relaxation more than allowing yourself to take a break from the hectic world around you and simply letting yourself enjoy some laughs.

2. “Treat Yo Self” to a Spa Day

The only thing more comfortable than a braless outfit? A soft, fuzzy robe! Today, treat yourself (or as we Parks & Rec fans like to say – treat yoself) to a spa day. Call up a girlfriend and take a drive to that spa you’ve seen everyone post about. Or have a solo spa day! Or light up some candles, toss your favorite new bath bomb into your tub, use that clay face mask you’ve been excited to try out, and enjoy a few hours of relaxation from the comforts of your own home.

3. Have a Cuddle Sesh With Your Furry BFF

Our pets will always be our biggest fans. They’ll never judge you and will always love you for who you are – regardless of if you’re in a bra or not! Take some time today to take advantage of this and have an extra extra comfortable cuddle sesh with them.

4. Rock Your Favorite Backless Outfit Braless!

As the saying goes, a women is never sexier than when she is comfortable In her clothes. So in honor of national no bra day, we are telling you ladies to ditch those uncomfortable bras and instead take advantage of the newfound fashion freedom that comes with being liberated from those constricting bras. Why not use this day to showcase those backless dresses you’ve been too scared to wear until today, or those low cut tops you bought long ago but never had the chance to wear out. Today is the day to leave those antiquated fashion rules behind and embrace being braless and flawless.

5. Go Online Shopping!

What’s better than finally purchasing what you’ve been obsessing over…that super cute tee or perfect gift set that works for every occasion? Doing all that from the comfort of your own house. So why not ditch the bra, throw on a comfy outfit and hit the cyber world to do find some new clothes.  Use coupon code NOBRA for 20% off when you shop with us this weekend. Enjoy, be free & shop!
